IFSH Berlin Office under New Management
Welcome, Anja Dahlmann! The IFSH Berlin Office has had a new head since the beginning of October. The political researcher and expert on humanitarian arms control is responsible for making IFSH research known to political decision-makers and the public in Berlin.

A joint IFSH-Berghof Foundation online event dealt with the question of how knowledge about security policy contexts can be generated and communicated in an increasingly complex and supposedly increasingly insecure world.

Deep Cuts Briefing on Missile Defense
On October 27, 2021, the Deep Cuts Project held a briefing to launch the new Deep Cuts Working Paper on “Missile Defense and the Offense-Defense Relationship”.

IFSH Director at International History Festival histoCON
On 21 and 22 October, the German Federal Agency for Civic Education hosted the digital, interactive and international history festival histoCON. IFSH Director Professor Dr Ursula Schröder illustrated why war exists to begin with and explained the conditions under which peace missions can succeed, as well as why the United Nations should be strengthened.

Roundtable: Dilemmas of Security Sector Reform Processes
The Federal Foreign Office and the IFSH’s Research and Knowledge Transfer Office on Security Sector Reform (SSR Hub) hosted the "Roundtable on Security Sector Reform" on 18 November. During this online event, employees of German ministries and representatives of various (international) organisations as well as scholars from Germany and around the world had the opportunity to take part in mutual exchange.

Peace Researchers in Dialogue with the Munich Security Conference (MSC)
IFSH peace researcher Dr Anna Kreikemeyer presented her research findings on the role of peaceful local actors in cooperation with international peace missions at the Munich Peace Meeting. The annual conference is organised by the Projektgruppe Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz verändern e.V.

IFSH Researcher Becomes Part of the Réseau Nucléaire et Stratégie - Nouvelle Génération
Franziska Stärk has been accepted into the 2021-2022 cohort of the Réseau Nucléaire et Stratégie - Nouvelle Génération. The network offers its members, young professionals and masters students, the opportunity to expand their knowledge through field trips and a summer programme.

Workshop on the Implementation of UN Cyber Norms
The IFSH research focus team International Cybersecurity recently held its second interdisciplinary workshop, which focussed on which actors and procedures could advance the implementation of the UN norms of responsible state behaviour in cyberspace.

Conference on Asymmetric Power
At the invitation of the Dutch Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law, a conference on "Asymmetric Power" took place on 14 October. Viktoria Budde from the IFSH and Dr Karoline Eickhoff from the Berghof Foundation presented interim results of their joint research project on this topic at the workshop "Trust in Security and Rule of Law Partnerships".

MPS Jubilee Class of 2021/22 off to a Flying Start
The 20th class of the Master of Peace and Security Studies programme is now underway. Eighteen students from Germany, Egypt, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, Colombia, Austria, Russia and Syria enjoyed a successful start to the programme.

First Young Deep Cuts Policy Brief Out Now In their first issue, Young Deep Cuts commissioners Artem Kvartalnov, Noah Mayhew and Daria Selezneva outline immediate priorities for US-Russian arms control. They show how to find compromise on some of the most difficult issues in future arms control discussions, namely long-range precision-guided weapons, missile defense systems and non-strategic nuclear weapons. In an interview in Judy Dempsey's blog Strategic Europe, Dr Ulrich Kühn talks about the history and current state of arms control, which had its peak between 1985 and 1995. At that time, Washington and Moscow had much to gain from reductions in conventional and nuclear arms.

IFSH Director Professor Dr Ursula Schröder and Dr Barbara Kunz will discuss this on 8 December with OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, among others. The event is organised by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in cooperation with the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation.
